When transporting Hazardous Materials categorized as Class 1 explosives, it is extremely important that the shipper informs the Carrier that the product which is going to be transported is a Class 1 explosive. Once the shipper and Carrier know that it is a Class 1 explosive, they need to properly identify the shipping container with the correct placards.

While Class 1 explosives are divided into 6 different Divisions, the Department of Transportation has expanded the number of explosive placards from 3 to 35. The number 35 is the possible code classification. So you can see that it is extremely important for proper identification of the product being transported.

For example, Class 1.1A Explosive Placard will display the classification code for an explosive and the compatibility group letter. The letter A is used to specify the controls for the transportation and storage to prevent an increase in hazards that might result if certain types of explosions were stored and transported together.

If you look at 173.50 of the CFR code, it will identify the 6 different divisions.

Once you have identified the product, you need to determine if placards are required on the transport vehicle. By looking at CFR code 172.504, this will identify the Hazard class on table 1 and table 2 when placards are required.

Table 1: placards are required when any amount of Class 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 is transported. Look at the following table and make reference to the Placard design.

Table 1
Category of material (Hazard class or division number and additional description, as appropriate) Placard name Placard design section reference (§)

1.1 EXPLOSIVES 1.1 172.522
1.2 EXPLOSIVES 1.2 172.522
1.3 EXPLOSIVES 1.3 172.522

Table 2: Placards are required when the amount is over 1,001 pounds. Look at the following table and make reference to the Placard design.

Table 2
Category of material (Hazard class or division number and additional description, as appropriate) Placard name Placard design section reference (§)
1.4 EXPLOSIVES 1.4 172.523
1.5 EXPLOSIVES 1.5 172.524
1.6 EXPLOSIVES 1.6 172.525

Remember to always look at the above Tables to indicate if placards are required.
